The Learning Lounge creates a safe, quiet and comfortable place where children can study with concentration. Education is very important. Education is not only self-development, but it also creates opportunities to get somewhere. Homework and self study are important aspects of the learning process, because students learn to work independent. Also creativity is very important in township areas, it is a way the people develop and express themselves. We want to encourage studying and stimulate creativity..

The community is very happy to have a nice study place for their children and they are willing to take care of the place. The community mothers open and close the Learning Lounge at the right times, maintain the place and take care of the surveillance shifts. The Learning Lounge can also be used for other educational purposes. For example the community can organise drum or craft lessons one evening a week. After a while we can improve the place by adding computers, books, games, a copy machine and other facilities.

The Learning Lounge can be the starting point of small, personal tours where the local women can take tourists on a walking tour to their homes, the schools, meet local artists, have dinner and enjoy music and poetry performances. Together they share the experience of an afternoon/evening in the township.

To make this happen we need sponsors. Next to the fact that you help the children in a township to build a future, we offer great advertising and investment opportunities.

The first Learning Lounge will be located in Kalkfontein, a township between Cape Town and Stellenbosch. Kalkfontein is a very diverse township with people from all over Africa living there.

The community is very happy to have a safe place for their children to go after school. A group of Mothers is willing to manage the Learning Lounge and promote the idea in the neighbourhood. Their task will be the local management of the Learning Lounge; open and close at the right times, maintaining, watch over the children’s safety and organize educational lessons or events.

Lorriena
One of the initiators of the project is Lorriena, a mother of 3 children, a foster mother for 4 children and a care parent of 1 child in Kalkfontein. She is a link between the community and social workers and she loves to work with children. Lorriena is a wonderful woman with heart for the community. She thinks the Learning Lounge is a good idea to help the community. “It is good that the children have a place where they can go after school, so they don’t stay on the streets”. Lorriena is the local manager of the first Learning Lounge and the owner of the coffee shop.

Dawn Roode

She is one of the initators and Director of Learning Lounge organising skills and educational workshops.

Gigi
Gigi is a mother of 3 children and a grandmother. She is a community worker and member of the community comity. Next to that she works for a woman organisation to protect the rights of females. Gigi is a lovely person and she is very happy to help the community with the Learning Lounge.

These three mothers work together with us and with other mothers to make the Learning Lounge successful. Their involvement is very important to make the project self sustainable.

The Learning Lounge aims to make studying attractive and effective by offering a safe, quiet and comfortable place in a crowded township, where children and students can study with concentration. But the Learning Lounge is also a place where children can learn, play and develop their creativity. Local artists can teach the children about music and creative arts This project has a simple, but innovative and unique concept. Combining local initiatives with entrepreneurship is what makes this project possible. Together with the township communities we create a place where kids can study. Attached is a coffee shop that is run by a group of supporting women, who keep an eye on the Learning Lounge and manage it. In doing so, we create valuable investment and advertisement opportunities that can guarantee the continuation of the project. The Learning Lounge coffee shop can be the starting point for small, personal tours where the local women can take tourists on a walking tour. Local artists can use the stage for performances.
